Phenotype evaluations revealed that a stable hepatocyte phenotype could be maintained during 21 days when encapsulated in the hydrogel. In conclusion
we have demonstrated the beneficial use of micro-well chips for hepatocyte aggregation and the size-dependent effects on hepatocyte phenotype. We also pointed out that methacrylamide-modified gelatin is suitable for the encapsulation of these aggregates.”
“Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with increased volumes of visceral fat and a high prevalence of the metabolic syndrome. In turn, affective disorders are frequently found in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is therefore unclear whether BPD per se may influence body composition. In order to clarify a potential relationship between BPD and body composition, we measured visceral fat content (VFC) in young depressed women with and without comorbid BPD and related this parameter to various features selleck kinase inhibitor of the metabolic syndrome. Visceral fat content was measured by magnetic resonance imaging in 22 premenopausal women with MDD only, in 44 women with BYL719 comorbid MDD and BPD, in 12 female BPD patients without MDD, and in 34 healthy women (CG). Data showed that depressed women without comorbid BPD had a 335% higher VFC and women with comorbid BPD had a 250% higher VFC than the CG women. When controlling
for age, data showed significant effects of MDD on VFC (F = 8.4; P = 0.005). However, BPD, with or without MDD, was not related to VFC. Young depressed women with and without comorbid BPD display increased visceral fat content when compared to control subjects and ARN-509 may therefore constitute a risk group for the development of the metabolic syndrome. BPD per se is not an additive risk factor in this context.”
“Purpose: Subdural electrodes are implanted for recording intracranial EEG (iEEG) in cases of medically refractory epilepsy as a means to locate cortical regions of seizure onset amenable to surgical resection. Without the aid of imaging-derived
3D electrode models for surgical planning, surgeons have relied on electrodes remaining stationary from the time between placement and follow-up resection. This study quantifies electrode shift with respect to the cortical surface occurring between electrode placement and subsequent reopening.\n\nMethods: CT and structural MRI data were gathered following electrode placement on 10 patients undergoing surgical epilepsy treatment. MRI data were used to create patient specific post-grid 3D reconstructions of cortex, while CT data were co-registered to the MRI and thresholded to reveal electrodes only. At the time of resective surgery, the craniotomy was reopened and electrode positions were determined using intraoperative navigational equipment. Changes in position were then calculated between CT coordinates and intraoperative electrode coordinates.
