Our study method involved the evaluation of disease frequency and the calculation of infection risk among travelers arriving in Europe from Africa during the period 2015-2019. The rate of infection from malaria among travelers (TIR) stood at 288 per 100,000, considerably greater than the rates for dengue (36 times higher) and chikungunya (144 times higher). The malaria TIR saw its peak amongst the arrivals from Central and Western Africa. Imported dengue cases reached 956, with 161 concurrent diagnoses of chikungunya. This period saw the highest TIR among travelers arriving from Central, Eastern, and Western Africa, primarily for dengue, and additionally for chikungunya among travelers originating from Central Africa. Documented cases of Zika virus disease, West Nile virus infection, Rift Valley fever, and yellow fever were found to be limited in quantity. Inter-regional and inter-continental sharing of anonymized traveler health data is a practice that should be actively encouraged.
Though the 2022 global Clade IIb mpox outbreak allowed for a thorough description of the disease, the extent of lasting health problems is still largely unknown. Preliminary results from a prospective cohort study of 95 mpox patients, tracked between 3 and 20 weeks post-symptom onset, are detailed herein. Veterinary clinical skills labs are designed for the development of a wide range of practical, clinical, and surgical competencies using models and simulators. A 2015 survey highlighted the importance of these facilities in veterinary education throughout North America and Europe. Using a similar survey, divided into three parts, this study aimed to capture recent modifications, focusing on the facility's structure, its integration in education and assessment, and its staffing. Employing Qualtrics for online distribution in 2021, the survey, encompassing multiple-choice and free-text questions, was disseminated through clinical skills networks and associate deans. Air Media Method Responses were received from veterinary colleges in 34 countries; 91 in total, 68 of which already operate clinical skills labs, and 23 plan to establish similar labs within the next one to two years. The facility's attributes, pedagogical approaches, assessment methodologies, and staffing were illuminated by the collated quantitative data. Emerging from the qualitative data were major themes related to the facility's design, its placement, its place within the curriculum, its effect on student learning, and the facility's management and support staff. Although orthopaedic surgeons are a major source of opioid prescriptions, there is limited information on whether disparities in opioid dispensing exist based on race or ethnicity after orthopaedic surgeries.

When examining postoperative opioid prescriptions, do patients identifying as Black, Hispanic/Latino, or Asian/Pacific Islander receive a lower analgesic dose than non-Hispanic White patients, differentiated by the type of surgical intervention?
Between 2017, January and 2021, March, 60,782 patients received orthopaedic surgical procedures at one of Penn Medicine's six hospital facilities. A subset of 61% (36,854) of the patients were selected for the study, based on the criterion of not having received an opioid prescription within the last year. Among the total patient group, 24,106 (40%) were excluded because they did not complete one of the top eight most prevalent orthopaedic procedures studied or the procedure was not handled by a Penn Medicine faculty member. The study's data set excluded 382 individuals. These patients had no race or ethnicity recorded, or they chose not to provide the information. This analysis encompassed 12366 patients. In the surveyed patient group, 65% (8076) of individuals identified as non-Hispanic White, 27% (3289) as Black, 3% (372) as Hispanic or Latino, 3% (318) as Asian or Pacific Islander, and 3% (311) as belonging to another racial group. To facilitate analysis, the morphine milligram equivalents of prescription dosages were calculated. After controlling for age, gender, and health insurance type within each procedure, multivariate logistic regression models were applied to assess statistical differences in opioid prescription receipt after surgery. Stratified by procedure type, Kruskal-Wallis tests were utilized to ascertain any differences in the total morphine milligram equivalent dose of prescribed medication.
Of the 12,366 patients, 11,770 (95%) received a prescription for an opioid medication. Following risk adjustment, no disparity was observed in the odds of Black patients receiving a postoperative opioid prescription, compared to non-Hispanic White patients (odds ratio 0.94, 95% confidence interval 0.78 to 1.15; p = 0.68). Similar results were found for Hispanic or Latino, Asian or Pacific Islander, and other racial groups. No variations in median morphine milligram equivalent doses of postoperative opioid analgesics were noted among different racial or ethnic groups for each of the eight surgical procedures (p > 0.01 in all cases).
Post-orthopedic procedures within this academic health system, our study found no variations in opioid prescribing patterns linked to patients' race or ethnicity. The surgical approaches employed in our orthopedic unit could be a possible explanation. A reduction in variability of opioid prescriptions is a potential outcome of adopting formally standardized opioid prescribing guidelines.
