This study endeavored to produce strong, uniform assessments of diabetes and pre-diabetes prevalence amongst Sri Lankan adults, a demographic potentially having the highest prevalence in South Asia, as suggested by previous research.
From the 2018/2019 initial wave of the nationally representative Sri Lanka Health and Ageing Study (SLHAS), we utilized data from 6661 adults. We determined glycemic status based on the patient's prior diabetes diagnosis, and either fasting plasma glucose (FPG) measurements, or in conjunction with 2-hour plasma glucose (2-h PG) measurements. Automated DNA After accounting for study design and subject participation bias, we calculated the crude and age-standardized prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes, using weights to address variations in major individual characteristics.
A crude prevalence of diabetes in adults, calculated using both 2-hour postprandial glucose (2-h PG) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), reached 230% (95% confidence interval [CI] 212% to 247%). The age-standardized prevalence was 218% (95% CI 201% to 235%). Employing solely FPG, the prevalence reached 185% (95% confidence interval 71% to 198%).
