of secure mother–infant attachment with its positive impact on cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral development. The effects were strongest for studies of disadvantaged women. Maternal postnatal depression has also been shown to be associated with impairment of cognitive development and secure attachment (Cogill et al. 1986; Murray et al. 1996).
